Take the Utah practice test

Four rounds of 10 questions covering Utah signs, right-of-way, speed limits, parking, DUI and phone laws, and teen rules, with a short explanation after every answer.

Round 1 · Questions 1–10

  1. 1Speed limits

White rectangular SPEED LIMIT 80 sign beside a road

This SPEED LIMIT 80 sign shows the highest limit posted in Utah. On which roads does the Utah Driver Handbook place limits that high?

    Show answer

Correct answer: On rural interstate highways

    Why

The handbook lists 65, 70, 75 or 80 mph for rural interstates, while major highways are usually posted at 55 and business or residential streets default to 25. Even at 80, the reasonable-and-prudent rule still asks you to slow down for snow, crosswinds or heavy traffic.

  2. 2Right-of-way

You and a pickup reach a four-way stop at the same moment. The pickup is on the cross street to your right. Who goes first?

    Show answer

Correct answer: The pickup, because it is on your right

    Why

At an all-way stop, the first to arrive is the first to go. When two vehicles get there together, Utah has you yield to the one on your right. Before you pull out, make sure the other driver is actually waiting for you.

  3. 3Road signs

White X-shaped RAILROAD CROSSING sign with a small YIELD sign below it, beside a railroad track

A white X-shaped RAILROAD CROSSING sign stands beside the tracks, with no flashing lights and no gate, and a train is approaching. Where do you stop?

    Show answer

Correct answer: Somewhere from 15 to 50 feet short of the closest rail

    Why

The crossbuck asks you to yield to trains: slow down, look both ways and be ready to stop. When you do stop, Utah wants you at least 15 feet and no more than 50 feet from the nearest rail, clear of the train but close enough to see down the line.

  4. 4Alcohol & phones

In December 2018, Utah became the first state to set this DUI limit for drivers 21 and older. What is it?

    Show answer

    Correct answer: 0.05% BAC

    Why

A Utah driver 21 or older breaks the law at a blood or breath alcohol level of 0.05 or higher. Commercial drivers are held to 0.04, and under 21 any measurable alcohol is a violation. You can be convicted below 0.05, too, if alcohol or drugs leave you unable to drive safely.

  5. 5Permit & teen rules

What is the youngest age at which you can apply for a Utah learner permit?

    Show answer

    Correct answer: 15

    Why

At 15 you book a learner permit appointment at a Driver License Division office, pay $19, and pass the 50-question written test and an eye test. A parent or guardian signs for financial responsibility, and driver education is required from 15 through 18.

  6. 6Parking

You find an open curb space with a fire hydrant at one end. How close to the hydrant does Utah let you park?

    Show answer

    Correct answer: 15 feet

    Why

Utah keeps parked cars at least 15 feet from a hydrant, so fire crews can hook up a hose without hunting for space. The same no-parking list sets 20 feet from a crosswalk and 30 feet from a stop sign or traffic signal.

  7. 7Safe driving

On a dark rural highway at night, how much following distance does the Utah Driver Handbook ask you to keep behind the car ahead?

    Show answer

Correct answer: At least four seconds

    Why

Utah’s base rule is two seconds, counted from the moment the car ahead passes a fixed point such as a sign. At night you add at least two more, because you see less and react later. Bad weather or poor visibility call for even more room.

  8. 8Road signs

You’re waiting to turn left at a Salt Lake City intersection when the arrow above your lane begins flashing yellow. What does it allow?

    Show answer

Correct answer: A left turn, but only after you yield to oncoming cars and pedestrians

    Why

The flashing yellow arrow lets you turn while oncoming traffic usually has a green light at the same moment. Pull forward, wait for a gap big enough to finish the turn, and check the crosswalk before you go. Any left turn in Utah means yielding to traffic coming the other way.

  9. 9Sharing the road

Seen from above: a police car with flashing lights stopped on the shoulder beside two lanes of traffic

A police car is stopped on the right shoulder of a Utah freeway with its lights flashing. You’re in the lane next to it, and the lane to your left is open. What does Utah’s move-over law require?

    Show answer

Correct answer: Slow down and, when it’s safe, move to a lane that isn’t next to the police car

    Why

Utah’s move-over law covers any stopped vehicle with flashing hazard or warning lights, not just police cars: slow down, give it as much room as you can, and change lanes when practical. A conviction means a four-hour live defensive driving class within 90 days, or a 90-day suspension.

  10. 10Permit & teen rules

Utah’s written knowledge test for a first permit has 50 questions. How many must you get right to pass?

    Show answer

    Correct answer: 40

    Why

The Driver License Division asks for 80% or better, so 40 correct answers pass and you can miss up to 10. There’s no time limit, and most people finish in 30 to 45 minutes. If you fail, you may try once more that day when the office has room, and one fee covers three attempts.

Round 2 · Questions 11–20

  1. 11Road signs

Yellow diamond-shaped sign with three arrows chasing each other in a circle

A yellow diamond sign with three curved arrows forming a circle warns that a roundabout is coming up. How do you enter it?

    Show answer

Correct answer: Slow down, give way to cars already circling and to people in the crosswalk, then enter when it’s clear

    Why

Utah roundabouts flow counterclockwise, and the drivers already inside go first. Watch the crosswalk as you approach, wait for a safe gap, then follow the circle to your street and exit.

  2. 12Right-of-way

You’re driving on a five-lane road with a center turn lane. A school bus on the opposite side, facing you, stops and turns on its flashing red lights. What does Utah law say about you?

    Show answer

Correct answer: You aren’t legally required to stop, but drivers behind the bus are

    Why

On a road with five or more lanes and a center turn lane, or on a divided highway with a median, Utah doesn’t require oncoming drivers to stop. Traffic behind the bus always stops until the red lights go off. On a two-lane road, or four lanes with no median, both directions stop; still slow down and watch for children either way.

  3. 13Speed limits

You turn off a main road into a quiet Ogden neighborhood and don’t see a speed limit sign anywhere. What limit applies?

    Show answer

    Correct answer: 25 mph

    Why

Utah’s default for business and residential areas is 25 mph whenever no other limit is posted. A posted sign always replaces the default, and beside a school at school times it drops to 20. On a narrow street lined with parked cars, even 25 can be too fast.

  4. 14Alcohol & phones

A 19-year-old has one beer at a party and drives home. A test finds a small but measurable amount of alcohol. What happens under Utah’s Not-a-Drop Act?

    Show answer

Correct answer: A six-month loss of driving privileges for a first offense

    Why

Drivers under 21 may not have any measurable alcohol in their system. A first Not-a-Drop violation costs six months of driving privileges, and a repeat within 10 years means two years or until 21, whichever is longer. If you’re under 21, the only safe amount before driving is none.

  5. 15Permit & teen rules

You’re 16 with a Utah learner permit. Before you can get your license, what does the state require?

    Show answer

Correct answer: Hold the permit at least 6 months and log 40 hours, 10 of them after sunset

    Why

Utah drivers under 18 keep the permit at least six months and log 40 practice hours, including 10 after dark. The licensed adult beside you must be a parent, stepparent, foster parent or guardian, an approved instructor, the adult who signed for your permit, or someone 21+ your unlicensed parent has authorized.

  6. 16Parking

Which of these parking spots would break Utah law?

    Show answer

Correct answer: 25 feet before a stop sign

    Why

Utah wants at least 30 feet between a parked car and a stop sign, yield sign, flashing beacon or traffic signal, so 25 feet is too close. The other spots are fine: hydrants need 15 feet, crosswalks 20 and railroad crossings 50, counted from the nearest rail.

  7. 17Safe driving

How long does the Utah Driver Handbook say your turn signal should blink before you turn or change lanes?

    Show answer

Correct answer: For at least 2 seconds

    Why

Utah measures signaling in time, not distance: at least two seconds before every turn and every lane change, and also when you pull away from or toward the curb. Those two seconds give the drivers around you time to notice and adjust.

  8. 18Lane markings

Freeway seen from above: double solid white lines separate a lane marked with white diamonds from the regular lanes

On I-15, two solid white lines separate the express lane, marked with white diamonds, from the regular lanes. You’re driving alone and have no Express Pass. What’s the rule?

    Show answer

Correct answer: Stay out: solo drivers need a paid Express Pass, and you may never cross the double white lines

    Why

Utah’s I-15 express lanes are free for carpools of two or more, motorcycles, buses and clean-fuel vehicles with a C decal; drivers alone need a paid Express Pass. Crossing the double white line is illegal, so enter and leave only where the line turns dashed.

  9. 19Crashes & emergencies

Your car and another collide on a Utah street. No one is hurt, but repairs to the two cars will clearly run about $4,000 in total. What must you do?

    Show answer

Correct answer: Call law enforcement right away, because the damage is $2,500 or more

    Why

Utah requires an immediate call to law enforcement (911) when a crash causes injury, death or at least $2,500 in total property damage. Whatever the damage, stop, help anyone hurt, and trade names, addresses, registration numbers and insurance details with the other driver.

  10. 20Road signs

Orange signs and barrels squeeze I-15 down to one lane, and a worker holding a sign paddle is directing traffic. What’s true in this Utah work zone?

    Show answer

Correct answer: Speeding fines are at least doubled, and you must follow the worker’s signals

    Why

Orange marks a work zone, and the person with the paddle is a flagger whose directions you must obey. Utah at least doubles speeding fines in highway work zones. Slow down early, leave extra room and expect workers and equipment close to your lane.

Round 3 · Questions 21–30

  1. 21Speed limits

Five-sided fluorescent yellow-green school sign with two children walking

A five-sided fluorescent yellow-green sign with two children on it marks a school ahead. No other limit is posted, and kids are heading home for the day. How fast may you drive past the school?

    Show answer

    Correct answer: 20 mph

    Why

Unless signs say otherwise, Utah sets 20 mph next to a school during recess, while children are arriving or leaving, and whenever the school-zone lights flash. Ease off well before the crosswalk and watch for kids stepping out between parked cars.

  2. 22Right-of-way

At a corner with no painted crosswalk, a woman steps off the curb to cross the street in front of you. What does Utah law require?

    Show answer

Correct answer: Yield, and wait until she’s past your half of the street

    Why

Utah drivers yield to anyone entering or crossing in a crosswalk, and that includes the unmarked ones at intersections. Wait until the walker is past your half of the road before you move. Never pass a car that has stopped for someone in a crosswalk; it may be hiding a pedestrian from your view.

  3. 23Road signs

On a mountain road near Park City, a sign comes into view but its symbol is still too far away to read. You can tell it’s a yellow diamond. What kind of message is it most likely carrying?

    Show answer

Correct answer: A warning about something ahead, such as a curve or a merge

    Why

In Utah, warning signs are usually yellow diamonds with black words or symbols: curves, merging traffic, a lane that ends, a signal ahead. Recognizing the shape early buys you a few extra seconds to ease off before you can read the details.

  4. 24Alcohol & phones

Arrested on suspicion of DUI, a 30-year-old driver refuses the breath test the officer asks for. It’s a first refusal. For how long is the license revoked?

    Show answer

    Correct answer: 18 months

    Why

Driving in Utah means you’ve already agreed to chemical testing, a rule called implied consent. A first refusal revokes the license for 18 months and a second for 36; under 21, it’s two years or until 21, whichever is longer. That’s far tougher than the 120-day suspension for a first DUI conviction.

  5. 25Permit & teen rules

You just got your Utah license at 16. For the first six months, who may ride with you when no licensed driver 21 or older is in the front seat?

    Show answer

Correct answer: Only members of your immediate family

    Why

For the first six months (or until 18, if that comes first), a new teen driver may carry only immediate family, unless a licensed driver 21+ rides in the front passenger seat. Farm work and emergencies are the only other exceptions. Fewer friends in the car means fewer distractions while you build skills.

  6. 26Parking

You park facing uphill on a canyon road that has no curb, just a gravel shoulder. Which way should your front wheels point?

    Show answer

Correct answer: Right, toward the edge of the road

    Why

With no curb to catch a tire, turning the wheels right means a car that starts rolling heads off the road instead of into traffic. With a curb, uphill means wheels away from it and downhill means wheels toward it. Set the parking brake every time.

  7. 27Safe driving

A Utah law that took effect May 6, 2026 changed one rule about roundabouts. What changed?

    Show answer

Correct answer: Drivers no longer have to signal their turns while going through a roundabout

    Why

HB 128 dropped the requirement to signal your intention to turn while traveling through a roundabout. Everything else stays the same: slow down, yield to traffic already circling and to pedestrians, and go counterclockwise to your exit.

  8. 28Lane markings

Road seen from above: a center lane bordered by solid and dashed yellow lines, with left-turn arrows pointing both ways

A busy road has a center lane edged on each side by a solid and a dashed yellow line, with turn arrows pointing both ways. How far may you drive in it before making your left turn?

    Show answer

Correct answer: No more than 500 feet

    Why

Drivers heading both ways share this middle lane to set up left turns. Utah lets you travel in it for no more than 500 feet before your turn. Signal, move in close to your turn, and watch for a driver coming the other way in the same lane.

  9. 29Sharing the road

On a snowy Utah highway with two lanes each way, a snowplow with flashing yellow lights is working with its blade down on its right side. What does Utah law say about passing it?

    Show answer

Correct answer: You may not pass on the right, where the blade is down

    Why

Utah law forbids passing a snowplow on the side where its blade is down while its yellow lights flash. When three or more plows work side by side in a staggered line, you may not pass on either side. Give plows plenty of room and patience.

  10. 30Alcohol & phones

You’re 25 and want to call a friend while driving on I-15. Under Utah law, how may you place the call while the car is moving?

    Show answer

Correct answer: Connect the call with a voice command, then talk

    Why

Utah bans manual phone use by every driver in a moving vehicle: no texting, dialing, browsing, photos or video. Adults may talk only on a call connected by voice command, and hands-free GPS is allowed. A texting violation can cost up to $100.

Round 4 · Questions 31–40

  1. 31Safe driving

Side view of a car tire riding up on a layer of water on a rainy road

Heavy rain is pooling on the freeway, and a layer of water is building up under your tires. Above roughly what speed can a car begin to hydroplane, according to the Utah Driver Handbook?

    Show answer

    Correct answer: 35 mph

    Why

On wet roads, tires can start riding up on water instead of gripping the pavement once you go faster than about 35 mph. Slow down when water collects, and keep your tires in good shape. In cold months, the handbook flags black ice as a particular danger on Utah roads.

  2. 32Right-of-way

You’re stopped at a red light and want to turn left. Your street carries one-way traffic, and so does the cross street, which flows to your left. No sign forbids the turn. What may you do in Utah?

    Show answer

Correct answer: Turn after a complete stop, yielding to traffic and pedestrians

    Why

Utah allows a left turn on a steady red in just this case: both the street you’re leaving and the street you’re entering run one way. You still make a full stop and yield first. Right turns on red are allowed more broadly, also after a full stop, unless a sign says no.

  3. 33Speed limits

Snow is falling on a canyon highway posted at 65 mph, and the pavement is turning white. What does Utah’s basic speed law expect from you?

    Show answer

Correct answer: Drive no faster than is reasonable and safe for the snow, even if that’s far below 65

    Why

Utah’s basic speed law says your speed must always be reasonable and prudent for the conditions, whatever the sign reads, so 65 in a snowstorm can earn a ticket. Crawling far below the flow without a reason can also be cited as impeding traffic, so match your speed to what the road allows.

  4. 34Alcohol & phones

A driver feels completely normal, but a blood test finds a measurable amount of cocaine, used the day before with no prescription. Is that driver breaking Utah law?

    Show answer

Correct answer: Yes: any measurable amount of a drug like this in your body is illegal while driving

    Why

For a drug like cocaine, Utah doesn’t wait for signs of impairment: driving with any measurable amount of the controlled substance or its metabolite in your body breaks the law, unless it was prescribed for you or otherwise taken lawfully. Even a legal prescription becomes a DUI if it leaves you unable to drive safely.

  5. 35Permit & teen rules

You’re 16 and newly licensed, and you want to drive home from a friend’s house at 12:30 a.m. No adult is with you, and the trip isn’t for work, school or an emergency. What does Utah law say?

    Show answer

Correct answer: Midnight to 5 a.m. is off-limits for you unless an exception applies

    Why

A newly licensed 16-year-old may not drive from midnight to 5 a.m. The exceptions: a licensed driver 21 or older in the front seat, trips to or from work or a school-sponsored activity, farm work, or an emergency. Plan to be home before midnight, or arrange a ride.

  6. 36Right-of-way

A summer storm has cut the power, and the traffic lights at a busy Provo intersection are completely dark. No officer is directing traffic. What should you do?

    Show answer

Correct answer: Stop completely and treat it as an all-way stop, yielding to vehicles on your right

    Why

When the signals go dark, Utah drivers come to a full stop and then go in turn, giving way to any vehicle on the right, just like at a four-way stop. If an officer shows up to direct traffic, follow the officer’s signals instead.

  7. 37Safe driving

You’re using high beams on a dark road when headlights appear coming toward you. Within what distance of that car must you switch to low beams in Utah?

    Show answer

    Correct answer: 500 feet

    Why

Utah has you dim within 500 feet of an oncoming vehicle and within 300 feet of one you’re following, so your lights don’t blind the other driver. Headlights must be on from sunset to sunrise, and any time you can’t clearly see people and vehicles 1,000 feet ahead.

  8. 38Road signs

A hay wagon creeping along a two-lane road in Cache Valley has an orange triangle with a red border fixed to its back. What does that emblem tell you?

    Show answer

Correct answer: It moves at less than 25 mph

    Why

That’s the slow-moving vehicle emblem, used on equipment that travels under 25 mph. You’ll close the gap fast, so slow down early, and pass only where passing is legal and the road ahead is clear: never on a curve, a hill that blocks your view or the shoulder.

  9. 39Permit & teen rules

Before a never-licensed driver gets a permanent Utah license, they must pass an online exam made up of four short videos and 40 questions. What score does it take?

    Show answer

    Correct answer: 100%

    Why

That’s the Traffic Safety and Trends Exam, which you register for with your permit number. Every answer has to be right, but you can retake it as many times as you need. Half of its questions deal with major causes of traffic deaths in Utah.

  10. 40Crashes & emergencies

After a minor fender bender on a busy road, nobody is hurt and both cars still run. What does the Utah Driver Handbook tell you to do?

    Show answer

Correct answer: Move the cars out of the travel lanes to a safe spot nearby and stay there

    Why

When no one is hurt, Utah law lets you move the vehicles out of the travel lanes to a safe spot close by, and you stay there to swap information. Cars left in the lanes invite a second crash. Leaving the scene can bring a suspension plus jail time, a fine or both, and driving off from a crash with injuries is a felony.

Under 18? Your road to a license

  1. 15Learner permitBook a DLD appointment, pass the 50-question test and an eye test, and have a parent or guardian sign for you. The $19 permit also lets you start driver ed.
  2. 40 hrsPractice drivingFinish driver ed, hold the permit at least six months and log 40 hours, 10 after sunset, with a licensed parent, guardian or instructor beside you.
  3. 16Provisional licenseScore 100% on the online Traffic Safety and Trends Exam and pass the driving skills test. Any license issued before 21 is provisional.
  4. 6 moPassenger limitFor the first six months, carry only immediate family unless a licensed driver 21+ rides up front. At 16, stay off the road midnight–5 a.m. unless an exception applies.
  5. 18Teen limits endUntil then, no phone use while driving except emergencies or a call with a parent. Your license stays provisional, with a stricter point limit, until 21.

At 18 you still need driver ed and 40 practice hours, but there’s no permit waiting period; from 19 you choose driver ed or a 90-day permit hold, and every first-time driver passes the Traffic Safety and Trends Exam and a skills test.

What’s on the Utah permit test

Every question on the DLD written test comes from the Utah Driver Handbook (2026 edition), which already includes the laws that took effect May 6, 2026. Here are the essentials in six key areas.

Road signs

  • Yellow diamonds warn of what’s ahead; orange signs mean a work zone, where speeding fines at least double.
  • A round yellow sign with an X and RR says a crossing is coming. The white crossbuck at the tracks means yield to trains.
  • A flashing yellow arrow lets you turn once oncoming traffic and pedestrians are clear.

Right-of-way

  • Same arrival at a four-way stop? The driver on your right goes first.
  • Signal lights out? Treat the corner as an all-way stop: full stop, then take turns.
  • School bus flashing red: everyone stops on a two-lane road. Oncoming traffic may go on a divided highway or a road of 5+ lanes with a center turn lane.

Speed limits

  • Reasonable and prudent comes first: snow, wind or heavy traffic can make the posted number too fast.
  • No sign? 25 mph in business and residential areas, 20 mph beside a school at school times.
  • Some rural interstates are posted at 80 mph, the highest limit in Utah.

Parking

  • Leave 15 feet from a hydrant, 20 feet from a crosswalk and 30 feet from a stop sign or signal.
  • Keep 50 feet from a crossing’s nearest rail and 20 feet from a fire station driveway.
  • At the curb, wheels within 12 inches; facing downhill, cut them into the curb and set the brake.

Alcohol & phones

  • Utah became the first state with a 0.05 DUI limit, in 2018; commercial drivers are held to 0.04.
  • Under 21, Not a Drop means any measurable alcohol costs you your license. An adult who refuses a chemical test loses it for 18 months.
  • No texting or dialing by hand: adults connect calls by voice command, and under 18 the phone is off-limits except for emergencies or a parent.

Teen rules

  • Permit under 18: your co-pilot is a licensed parent, stepparent, foster parent, guardian, instructor or the adult who signed.
  • First six months licensed: immediate family only, unless a licensed driver 21+ sits up front.
  • At 16, no driving midnight–5 a.m., except for work, school activities, farm work, emergencies or with a licensed driver 21+.

Utah permit test FAQ

How many questions are on the Utah permit test, and what score passes?

The Driver License Division’s written knowledge test has 50 closed-book questions, all based on the Utah Driver Handbook. You need 80% or better, so 40 correct answers pass and you can miss up to 10. There’s no time limit; most people finish in 30 to 45 minutes.

How many times can I retake the Utah written test?

Fail once and you can try again the same day, up to two tests a day when the office can fit you in. One application fee covers three attempts within 12 months; after a third fail, you pay again. There’s no required waiting period, and your test scores and permit stay valid for 18 months.

Can I take the Utah permit test online?

No. You take the knowledge test in person at a Driver License Division office, so book a learner permit appointment first; walk-ins wait behind appointments. What you do online is the Traffic Safety and Trends Exam: four short videos and 40 questions that every first-time driver must pass with 100% before the permanent license, with unlimited retakes.

Can I take the Utah permit test in Spanish?

Yes. If you’re applying for a regular or limited-term license, you can take the written test in Spanish, with audio and on-screen text. Applicants for a Driving Privilege Card must test in English. This practice test is in Spanish too, and so is the app.

How old do you have to be to get a learner permit in Utah?

15. Under 18, you also need driver education, then you hold the permit at least six months and log 40 practice hours, 10 after sunset, before a license at 16. For the first six months of that license, only immediate family may ride with you unless a licensed driver 21 or older sits up front, and at 16 you can’t drive from midnight to 5 a.m. without an exception. Until 18, the phone is off-limits behind the wheel except for emergencies or a call with a parent.

How much does a Utah learner permit cost?

The learner permit is $19, and that fee covers up to three tries at the written test. Your first license then costs $39 for a provisional license (age 20 and under) or $52 for an adult license (21 and over). Fees aren’t refundable, and DLD takes cash, check, money order or credit card.

Is the Utah permit test given by the DMV?
