Take the Georgia practice test

Four rounds of 10 questions that mix Georgia road signs with road rules: right-of-way, speed limits, parking, alcohol and phone laws, and teen license rules. After each pick, a short explanation shows why.

Round 1 · Questions 1–10

  1. 1Crashes & emergencies

Yellow diamond-shaped sign with a leaping deer beside a two-lane country road

Driving a rural Georgia highway in November, you pass a yellow diamond sign showing a leaping deer. A moment later a deer bounds into your headlights. What does the Georgia Drivers' Manual tell you to do?

    Show answer

Correct answer: Brake firmly and stay in your lane without swerving

    Why

Swerving can send you off the road or into another car, which is why Georgia's manual says to slow down as hard as you safely can and never swerve. Deer are most active in October, November and December, so ease off wherever these signs are posted and scan both shoulders.

  2. 2Speed limits

You're driving through a residential neighborhood in Macon and haven't seen a speed limit sign. What limit does Georgia law set here?

    Show answer

    Correct answer: 30 mph

    Why

Georgia's general limit in any urban or residential district is 30 mph unless signs say otherwise. Local authorities can post a different number, so watch for signs as you drive in, and go slower still around kids, parked cars and blind driveways.

  3. 3Right-of-way

School bus seen from behind on a two-lane road, red lights flashing and its stop arm out

You're behind a school bus on a two-lane road when it stops, its red lights flash and the stop arm swings out. If you pass it anyway, what penalties can you face in Georgia?

    Show answer

Correct answer: A required court appearance, up to $1,000 in fines and 6 points

    Why

Georgia treats this as a serious offense, and drivers under 21 also lose their license. Stay stopped until the bus moves or turns off its signals and every child is clear of the road. Amber lights come first: they mean the bus is about to stop, so slow down and get ready.

  4. 4Alcohol & phones

A 19-year-old driver in Athens is pulled over after a party and blows 0.03 on a breath test. Under Georgia law, is the driver considered under the influence?

    Show answer

Correct answer: Yes, because drivers under 21 are over the limit at 0.02

    Why

Georgia draws the line at 0.02 for drivers under 21, 0.08 for adults and 0.04 for anyone driving a commercial vehicle. An under-21 DUI conviction at 0.02 to under 0.08 suspends the license for at least 6 months, with no limited permit available.

  5. 5Permit & provisional license

The Georgia DDS knowledge exam has a Road Signs test and a Road Rules test, 20 questions each. What does it take to pass?

    Show answer

Correct answer: At least 15 correct on each test

    Why

Each test is scored on its own, and you need 15 of 20, or 75%, on both. A great score on one part can't make up for falling short on the other, but if you fail only one, you retake just that part.

  6. 6Parking

Running into a Decatur coffee shop, you spot an open curb space near a fire hydrant. What's the closest Georgia law lets you park to it?

    Show answer

    Correct answer: 15 feet

    Why

Georgia requires at least 15 feet between your car and a fire hydrant; you may stop closer only for a moment to let passengers in or out. Firefighters need that space to hook up hoses fast. The same list sets 20 feet from an intersection crosswalk and 30 feet from a stop sign.

  7. 7Road signs

Georgia's Drivers' Manual teaches seven basic sign shapes. Which shape is reserved for a single message: a railroad crossing is coming up?

    Show answer

    Correct answer: Round

    Why

A round sign warns that tracks cross the road a few hundred feet ahead, so slow down, look and listen, and be ready to stop. Passing is not allowed at any railroad crossing in Georgia. The pentagon belongs to schools, and the octagon to STOP.

  8. 8Safe driving

It's 2 p.m. and a steady rain is falling on I-285. What does Georgia law say about your headlights?

    Show answer

Correct answer: They must be on whenever it's raining

    Why

Georgia wants headlights on any time it's raining, not just after dark. At night they go on once the sun has been down for half an hour and stay on until half an hour before it rises, and they're needed whenever you can't see far ahead. In rain, fog or snow, stick with low beams, since high beams reflect glare back at you.

  9. 9Right-of-way

Can you ever turn left against a red signal in Georgia, after a full stop and with no sign saying otherwise?

    Show answer

Correct answer: Yes, if both streets are one-way and you turn from the far-left lane

    Why

Georgia's only left-on-red case is a turn between two one-way streets, made from the leftmost lane into traffic that moves to your left. Stop completely first, give way to people on foot and to crossing cars, and look for a NO TURN ON RED sign. Right on red is allowed far more widely, also after a full stop.

  10. 10Lane markings

Road seen from above: a center lane bordered by solid and dashed yellow lines, with left-turn arrows pointing both ways

The middle lane of a busy suburban road is bordered by a solid and a dashed yellow line on each side, with left-turn arrows pointing both ways. In Georgia, how far ahead of your turn may you move into it?

    Show answer

Correct answer: No more than 300 feet before the turn

    Why

This shared center lane is for left turns only, from either direction, and Georgia limits you to the last 300 feet before your turn. It's not a passing lane or a place to cruise, and drivers coming the other way may be using it at the same time.

Round 2 · Questions 11–20

  1. 11Road signs

Five-sided fluorescent yellow-green sign with two children walking, beside a two-lane road

A five-sided, fluorescent yellow-green sign showing two walking children stands beside a Georgia road. According to the Drivers' Manual, how far ahead of the school zone or crossing is this kind of sign placed?

    Show answer

Correct answer: Between 150 and 700 feet ahead

    Why

Georgia saves the pentagon shape for school zones and school crossings, and posts it 150 to 700 feet early so you have room to slow down. Look for children and crossing guards, and for a school speed limit sign: its lower limit applies while its yellow lights are flashing.

  2. 12Right-of-way

On a four-lane road with a center turn lane, a school bus stops on the far side to pick up children. Its red lights flash and its stop arm is out. Do you have to stop?

    Show answer

Correct answer: Yes, a turn lane doesn't count as a divider, so both directions stop

    Why

Georgia changed this rule in 2019: a center turn lane no longer counts as a divider, so traffic both ways stops. Oncoming drivers may keep moving only on a highway split by a grass median, an unpaved strip or a physical barrier. Drivers behind the bus always stop.

  3. 13Speed limits

On a rural stretch of I-75 between Macon and Valdosta, assume no sign says otherwise. What is Georgia's general speed limit there?

    Show answer

    Correct answer: 70 mph

    Why

70 mph is the highest general limit in Georgia, and it belongs to rural interstates. Urban interstates and multi-lane divided highways drop to 65 mph, and most other roads to 55. A posted sign always overrides these defaults.

  4. 14Alcohol & phones

After a DUI arrest, a Georgia driver is asked to take a state-administered breath test and says no. What does refusing cost?

    Show answer

Correct answer: A license suspension of at least one year

    Why

Georgia's implied consent law means every driver agrees to state chemical testing, such as a breath or blood test, and refusing it suspends your license for at least a year. If you do take the state test, you may also get extra tests of your own, paid for by you.

  5. 15Permit & provisional license

You're 15 with a Georgia Class CP learner's permit. Who may sit beside you as your supervising driver?

    Show answer

Correct answer: An adult 21 or older with a Class C license, fit to drive

    Why

Georgia requires your supervisor to be at least 21, hold a Class C license, be able to take over the car and sit in the front passenger seat. It doesn't have to be a parent. Use these drives toward the 40 hours, 6 of them at night, you'll need for your Class D.

  6. 16Parking

You'd like to parallel park on the street just before a YIELD sign. How much room does Georgia law require between your car and the sign?

    Show answer

    Correct answer: 30 feet

    Why

Georgia wants 30 feet of clear curb before a stop sign, a yield sign or a traffic light, so the sign stays in view and drivers pulling up can see cross traffic. A railroad crossing needs even more room: 50 feet.

  7. 17Safe driving

The car ahead passes a mailbox. Before you can finish saying 'one-thousand-one, one-thousand-two,' your own bumper is at the mailbox. According to the Georgia Drivers' Manual, what does that tell you?

    Show answer

Correct answer: You're following too closely and should drop back

    Why

That count is the manual's quick check for at least two seconds of space; reaching the mark before the count ends means you need more room. Leave even more at night, in bad weather, near construction and in heavy traffic, and give motorcycles three or four seconds.

  8. 18Road signs

Orange work-zone signs line a stretch of I-16, and a black-and-white SPEED LIMIT sign posts a lower limit for the work zone. What can a driver face in Georgia for breaking that limit?

    Show answer

Correct answer: A fine of $100 to $2,000, jail of up to 12 months, or both

    Why

The enforceable limit is the one on the black-and-white SPEED LIMIT sign; black-and-orange advisory plaques only suggest a safe speed. Breaking a work-zone limit is a high and aggravated misdemeanor in Georgia, so slow down as soon as the first orange sign comes into view.

  9. 19Sharing the road

Police car stopped on the right shoulder with its lights flashing, seen from above beside two lanes of traffic

Ahead on I-20, a patrol car is stopped on the right shoulder with its lights flashing, and you're in the lane right next to it. What does Georgia's Move Over law, the Spencer Pass Law, require?

    Show answer

Correct answer: Move to a lane not next to it if you can; if not, slow below the limit and be ready to stop

    Why

Georgia's Move Over law covers stopped emergency vehicles, tow trucks, and highway maintenance and utility vehicles with flashing lights. Switching lanes gives the people working there a buffer; when traffic won't let you, dropping below the limit is your fallback.

  10. 20Crashes & emergencies

Your car and another bump on a four-lane Georgia highway. No one is hurt, both cars can be driven, and the damage looks like about $1,500. What should happen next?

    Show answer

Correct answer: Move the cars to a safe spot off the travel lanes and notify police

    Why

On a multilane highway, Georgia wants drivable cars out of the travel lanes, onto the shoulder, the median or another safe place, when no one is seriously hurt. Police must be notified right away whenever someone is hurt or killed, or property damage is over $500.

Round 3 · Questions 21–30

  1. 21Lane markings

Freeway seen from above: two solid white lines separate a left lane marked with white diamonds from the lane next to it

On an Atlanta freeway, the far-left lane is marked with white diamonds and separated from your lane by two solid white lines. You have a passenger with you. Can you move into that lane right here?

    Show answer

Correct answer: No, double solid white lines can't be crossed; wait for a dashed section

    Why

The diamond marks an HOV lane: cars carrying two or more people, buses, motorcycles and vehicles with alternative-fuel plates may use it. You may move in or out only where the line is dashed, because lane changes across double solid white lines are prohibited. HOV violations can cost up to $75 for a first offense.

  2. 22Right-of-way

You're on a busy Atlanta street with two lanes each way. A pedestrian steps into the crosswalk from the far curb, on the other side of the road. When does Georgia law require you to stop and stay stopped?

    Show answer

Correct answer: Once the pedestrian is on your half of the road, or within one lane of it

    Why

Georgia has you stop and remain stopped for anyone crossing on your half of the road, and that half means all the lanes going your way. You also stop when the walker is within one lane of your half, which here is the lane just past the center line. Wait until they're clear before you move.

  3. 23Speed limits

Georgia's Super Speeder law adds a $200 state fee on top of the local fine. Which conviction triggers it?

    Show answer

Correct answer: Going 75 mph or faster on a two-lane road, or 85 mph or faster on any road

    Why

The extra $200 is owed to the state on top of whatever the local court charges. Miss the deadline and your license is suspended, with another $50 to reinstate it. On a two-lane road the line is 75 mph; on any other road it's 85.

  4. 24Alcohol & phones

Under the Hands-Free Georgia Act, which of these is legal for an adult driver while the car is moving?

    Show answer

Correct answer: Following GPS directions on a phone in a dashboard mount

    Why

Georgia drivers may not hold or support a phone with any part of the body, so even propping it on a shoulder breaks the law. Navigation, voice-to-text and calls through an earpiece or the car's speakers are fine. Reading, writing, watching video and recording it are not; only a camera that records nonstop, like a dash cam, gets a pass.

  5. 25Permit & provisional license

You got your Georgia learner's permit on your 15th birthday. What's the shortest time you must hold it before applying for a Class D license?

    Show answer

Correct answer: 1 year and 1 day

    Why

Georgia requires at least 1 year and 1 day on the permit, with no major violations that got it suspended, and driver education doesn't shorten that. Starting at 15, the earliest Class D date is the day after your 16th birthday.

  6. 26Parking

Four friends each parked on a Georgia street to run a quick errand. Which one parked legally?

    Show answer

Correct answer: Cara, 25 feet from a fire station driveway, same side

    Why

Near a fire station, Georgia asks for 20 feet from the driveway on the same side, or 75 feet when you park across the street from it, so Cara is fine. The others fall short: hydrants need 15 feet, railroad crossings 50 feet and intersection crosswalks 20 feet.

  7. 27Safe driving

You're on a dark country road in South Georgia with your high beams on when a car appears ahead, coming toward you. Within what distance must you switch to low beams?

    Show answer

    Correct answer: 500 feet

    Why

Georgia requires low beams within 500 feet of an oncoming vehicle, and within 200 feet when you're following someone. Save high beams for rural roads with no other cars nearby, and dim them on lighted streets and in rain, fog, snow or smoke.

  8. 28Road signs

Your left-turn signal is showing a flashing yellow arrow. What does that arrow allow you to do?

    Show answer

Correct answer: Turn left once you've yielded to oncoming traffic and pedestrians

    Why

A flashing yellow arrow lets you turn, but oncoming drivers still have a green light, so they keep the right-of-way. Wait for a safe gap, watch for people in the crosswalk you're turning across, and don't start the turn if you can't finish it.

  9. 29Right-of-way

Two cars reach a rural crossroads with no signs or signals at the same moment. You're on the left; the other driver approaches from your right. Who goes first?

    Show answer

Correct answer: The other driver: the car on the left yields to the car on the right

    Why

With nothing posted to settle it, Georgia has the driver on the left yield to the one on the right. Slow down well before any unmarked crossing so you can stop if someone else is arriving, and never count on the other driver knowing the rule.

  10. 30Sharing the road

You come up behind a bicyclist on a two-lane Georgia road with a 45 mph limit, and oncoming traffic keeps you from moving fully into the other lane. How do you pass legally?

    Show answer

Correct answer: Slow to 35 mph or less and keep at least 3 feet from the bike

    Why

Georgia's three-foot law has two parts: move to a lane not next to the rider when you can, and if you can't, slow to 10 mph under the limit or 25 mph, whichever is higher, and keep at least 3 feet away. Bicyclists may use the full lane and don't have to ride in a bike lane, so wait for a safe gap.

Round 4 · Questions 31–40

  1. 31Road signs

Red rectangular sign reading WRONG WAY in white letters beside a road

Pulling out of a gas station at night, you turn onto a freeway ramp and see a red rectangular sign with WRONG WAY in white letters. What has happened?

    Show answer

Correct answer: You've entered a one-way ramp or highway against the flow of traffic

    Why

WRONG WAY signs face drivers headed the wrong direction on a one-way highway or ramp, where every other vehicle is coming at you. Pull over as soon as it's safe, turn around and leave the way you came in. A DO NOT ENTER sign carries a similar message: traffic on that road moves toward you.

  2. 32Right-of-way

A marked patrol car signals you to pull over on a dark stretch of highway with no shoulder. What does Georgia law let you do?

    Show answer

Correct answer: Signal with flashers or a turn signal and drive on, within the limit, to a safe spot

    Why

Normally you pull to the right edge, clear of any intersection, and stop. When stopping there would be unsafe, Georgia lets you switch on your flashers or a turn signal to show the officer you're heading for a safe spot, then continue at or below the posted limit to a reasonably safe place. In 2026, HB 1161 wrote this option into the state's main pull-over law.

  3. 33Speed limits

You're cruising in the far-left lane of a three-lane Georgia interstate at exactly the speed limit when a faster car comes up behind you. What does Georgia's 'Slow Poke' law require?

    Show answer

Correct answer: Move out of the left lane and let the faster car by

    Why

On roads with two or more lanes going your way, Georgia expects you to leave the left lane when a faster vehicle approaches, no matter how fast you're going. The law makes exceptions for congestion, bad weather, or when you're getting ready to exit or turn left.

  4. 34Alcohol & phones

What's the penalty for a first conviction under Georgia's hands-free law?

    Show answer

Correct answer: Up to $50 and 1 point

    Why

Fines and points climb with each conviction inside 24 months: up to $100 and 2 points for a second, and up to $150 and 3 points for a third or later. If your first charge is for holding the phone, showing the court a hands-free device or proof you bought one clears it, a break you get only once.

  5. 35Alcohol & phones

A Georgia driver is convicted of having an open container of alcohol within reach while driving. How many points go on that driver's record?

    Show answer

    Correct answer: 2 points

    Why

An open container while driving adds 2 points to your Georgia record. Points stack up: 15 within 24 months suspends your license, and drivers under 18 lose theirs at just 4 points in 12 months. The simplest plan is to keep opened alcohol out of the car.

  6. 36Permit & provisional license

You're 16 and just got a Georgia Class D license. Your shift at work ends at 12:30 a.m. Can you drive yourself home?

    Show answer

Correct answer: No, the midnight to 5 a.m. curfew has no exceptions

    Why

Georgia's Class D curfew runs from 12:00 midnight to 5:00 a.m., and it has no exception for work, school or anything else. Line up a ride with a fully licensed adult instead. The limit follows the license class, so it stays until you upgrade to Class C.

  7. 37Permit & provisional license

Eight months after getting your Class D license, you want to drive two friends from school, both 17 and not related to you, to the mall. Is that allowed?

    Show answer

Correct answer: No, months 7 to 12 allow just one non-family passenger under 21

    Why

Georgia loosens passenger limits in steps: family only for the first 6 months, one non-family passenger under 21 for the next 6, then up to three after the first year. Immediate family includes parents, siblings, grandparents and anyone who lives in your home.

  8. 38Parking

A fire truck is parked at a burning house on your street while the crew works. Unless you're on official business, how close to it may you park?

    Show answer

Correct answer: No closer than 500 feet

    Why

Georgia keeps other cars at least 500 feet from a fire truck stopped at a fire, which leaves room for more equipment and crews. When a fire truck is answering an alarm, don't follow it any closer than 200 feet.

  9. 39Safe driving

A truck behind you on a two-lane road wants to pass, and you can see the road ahead is clear. Is it legal in Georgia to flash your turn signals to tell the driver it's safe?

    Show answer

Correct answer: No, signaling another driver to pass is illegal in Georgia

    Why

Georgia's manual is clear that flashing your signals as a go-ahead is against the law. The driver behind can't see exactly what you see, and a wrong call can cause a head-on crash. Use your signals only for your own moves, and let other drivers decide when it's safe to pass.

  10. 40Road signs

A summer storm has knocked out power, and the traffic lights at a busy Savannah intersection are completely dark. How do you go through?

    Show answer

Correct answer: Treat it like a four-way stop: stop, then go in turn

    Why

When a signal is completely dark, Georgia treats the intersection as an all-way stop: everyone stops, and drivers go in the order they arrived. A flashing red light works like a STOP sign, while a flashing yellow means slow down and proceed with care.

What’s on the Georgia permit test

Study the Georgia DDS Drivers’ Manual (2023–2024 edition). The Road Signs test covers signs, signals and road markings; the Road Rules test covers Georgia traffic laws and safe driving. Start with these six areas.

Road signs

  • Know the shapes: octagon for STOP, round for a railroad ahead, five sides for a school zone or crossing.
  • Yellow warns, orange means road work, and blue points you to services.
  • A yellow pennant on the left side of the road marks where a no-passing zone begins.

Right-of-way

  • No sign or signal and you arrive together? The driver on the left yields to the driver on the right.
  • A school bus flashing red stops traffic both ways, even across a center turn lane.
  • Crosswalk: stop and stay stopped while a walker is on your half of the road or one lane from it.

Speed limits

  • No sign in a city or neighborhood? The limit is 30 mph.
  • 70 mph on rural interstates, 65 on urban ones, 55 on most other roads.
  • Super Speeder: 75+ on a two-lane road or 85+ anywhere adds a $200 state fee.

Parking

  • Park 15 feet or more from a hydrant, and 20 feet back from an intersection’s crosswalk.
  • Stay 30 feet back from a stop sign or signal, and 50 feet from a railroad crossing.
  • Never park on a bridge, a crosswalk or the tracks, or double-park beside another car.

Alcohol & phones

  • BAC limits: 0.08 at 21 and over, 0.02 under 21, 0.04 in a commercial vehicle.
  • Refuse the state’s chemical test and lose your license for at least a year.
  • Hands-Free Georgia: no phone in your hand while driving, at any age.

Teen rules

  • Class D curfew: midnight to 5 a.m., with no exceptions.
  • Family-only passengers for 6 months, then one non-family passenger under 21.
  • Under 18, 4 points in 12 months means losing your license.

Georgia permit test FAQ

How many questions are on the Georgia DDS permit test, and what’s a passing score?

40, split into two tests of 20: Road Signs and Road Rules. You need at least 15 right on each one (75%), and if you fail only one, you retake just that part. The exam is given by the Department of Driver Services (DDS), Georgia’s version of the DMV.

How many times can I take the Georgia knowledge test?

DDS doesn’t publish a limit. After your first failed try you can test again the next day; after a second or later fail, you wait 7 days. Retests are booked by appointment, and the $10 permit fee is paid again before each attempt, with no refund if you fail.

Can I take the Georgia permit test online?

No. The knowledge exam is taken in person, on a computer at a DDS Customer Service Center, and every center except Jackson gives it on a walk-in basis. Fill out the online License/ID/Permit Form before you go, and arrive early: you must be seated at the test computer at least 30 minutes before closing.

Can I take the Georgia permit test in Spanish?

Yes. Spanish is one of 26 languages DDS offers for the knowledge exam. The road test is in English only, and there’s no Spanish edition of the Drivers’ Manual, so this practice test and the app, both available in Spanish, make studying easier.

How old do you have to be to get a learner’s permit in Georgia?

15. Under Georgia’s TADRA rules, you then hold the permit at least 1 year and 1 day, finish Joshua’s Law driver ed and the ADAP course, and complete 40 supervised hours (6 at night, no log required) before a Class D license at 16. With a Class D, you can’t drive from midnight to 5 a.m., and passengers are limited: family only for 6 months, then one non-family passenger under 21, then up to three.

How much does a Georgia learner’s permit cost?

$10, paid before you test, and the permit is good for 2 years. If you fail, you pay the $10 again before your next try. Later, the Class D license costs $10, and a full Class C license costs $32 for 8 years.

What do I need to bring to DDS for my permit?

Submit the online License/ID/Permit Form first; DDS keeps it on file for 60 days. Then bring proof of identity, two documents showing your Georgia address and proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful presence, all in English, and have your full Social Security Number ready for the form. Under 18, bring a parent, guardian or responsible adult to sign the form, plus proof of school enrollment.

What’s the best way to study for the Georgia permit test?

Read the DDS Drivers’ Manual and give road signs plenty of attention, since they’re half the exam. Then practice until 15 of 20 feels easy on both parts. Warm up with the 40 questions above, then move to the app: 459 Georgia questions and 36 short lessons, each answer explained.
