Round 1 · Questions 1–10
1Speed limits
Crossing Oklahoma, you pass a white sign reading SPEED LIMIT 80. On which kind of road can the state post a limit that high?
Show answer
Correct answer: A turnpike
Why
State law lets turnpikes be posted as high as 80 mph, the top limit in Oklahoma, while the Driver Manual lists 75 mph for interstates and other controlled-access highways. Even at 80, ease off when rain, wind or heavy traffic make that speed unsafe.
2Right-of-way
Your car and a pickup on the cross street come to a halt together at an all-way stop. The pickup is to your right. What does Oklahoma’s rule say?
Show answer
Correct answer: The pickup goes first; you’re on its left, so you yield
Why
In Oklahoma the first vehicle to stop is the first to go. When two arrive together, the driver on the left yields to the one on the right, and the same rule applies where there are no signs at all. Before you pull out, make sure the pickup is actually moving.
3Alcohol & phones
What alcohol limit applies to a 19-year-old driver in Oklahoma?
Show answer
Correct answer: Zero: any measurable amount is a violation
Why
Oklahoma has zero tolerance for drivers under 21: any measurable alcohol in breath or blood breaks the law. A first offense brings a six-month revocation and a second one 12 months. At 21 and older, 0.08 is DUI, and a reading above 0.05 can be used as evidence of impaired driving.
4Permit & teen rules
What is the youngest age for an Oklahoma learner permit, and what does it take?
Show answer
Correct answer: 15, if you’re enrolled in an approved driver education course
Why
At 15 you qualify only while enrolled in and taking an approved driver ed course, and you also need to pass the vision screening and written test. At 16, driver ed becomes optional. You can sit the online test from 14, but the permit itself waits for 15 or 16.
5Parking
There’s an open curb space beside a fire hydrant on an Oklahoma street. What’s the closest you may legally park to the hydrant?
Show answer
Correct answer: 15 feet
Why
Oklahoma law keeps parked cars 15 feet or more from a hydrant, and where a volunteer fire department serves the area, a local ordinance can double that to 30 feet. Crews need room to connect hoses fast. Hydrants can hide behind tall grass or snow, so look before you pull in.
6Road signs
A round yellow sign with a big X and the letters R R warns of tracks ahead. As you get closer, the crossing lights start flashing. How far from the tracks does Oklahoma law say to stop?
Show answer
Correct answer: In the zone 15 to 50 feet short of the closest rail
Why
The round sign is only the early warning. Once signals flash, a gate comes down or a train is near, Oklahoma wants your bumper at least 15 feet from the closest rail, yet within 50 feet of it, and you stay put until crossing is safe. Never go around or under a lowered gate.
7Safe driving
What following distance does the Oklahoma Driver Manual recommend in normal conditions, and in bad weather?
Show answer
Correct answer: 3 seconds; 4 in bad weather
Why
Choose a fixed point such as a sign or overpass. When the car ahead passes it, count; if you get there before three seconds, drop back, and stretch the gap to four when roads are wet, icy or hard to see. The manual also offers a backup gauge: a car length of space per 10 mph of speed.
8Right-of-way
The gravel county road you’re on runs into a paved road, and nothing at the junction says stop or yield. What does Oklahoma law require?
Show answer
Correct answer: You yield to traffic on the paved road
Why
Oklahoma ranks its roads even without signs: an unpaved county road yields to a paved one, a county road yields at a state or federal highway, and a private drive yields to county and state roads. Drivers on the bigger road won’t expect you, so stop and look both ways before you pull out.
9Sharing the road
You’re about to pass a cyclist on a road with a single lane in your direction. How much room does Oklahoma law require?
Show answer
Correct answer: At least 3 feet
Why
Oklahoma requires at least 3 feet when you pass a bicycle in a single lane; with two or more lanes your way, move into the next lane if it’s safe. You may even cross a no-passing line to get around a cyclist when the road ahead is clear. Expect riders to treat some stop signs like yield signs, which Oklahoma law allows.
10Alcohol & phones
Since November 1, 2025, what has Oklahoma banned in road construction zones, and in marked school zones while the reduced limit is in effect?
Show answer
Correct answer: Holding or using a hand-held phone
Why
Under the newer law, active school zones and work zones are hands-free only. Calls through hands-free or voice-operated technology are still allowed, and holding the phone can cost up to $100. Texting behind the wheel was already illegal for every driver in the state.
Round 2 · Questions 11–20
11Road signs
Near a school you pass a five-sided, fluorescent yellow-green sign with two children on it. Just beyond, the yellow light on a School Zone speed sign is flashing. What should you do?
Show answer
Correct answer: Slow to the speed shown on the School Zone sign and watch for children
Why
In Oklahoma, fluorescent yellow-green marks school areas, and a flashing light on the School Zone sign means its lower limit applies right now. Speeding there doubles the fine, and since November 2025 your phone must stay out of your hand in an active school zone. Kids can step out between parked cars, so keep a foot near the brake.
12Speed limits
Miles down a rural county road, you still haven’t passed a speed limit sign. Unless the county has posted something else, what is the limit?
Show answer
Correct answer: 55 mph
Why
Oklahoma law sets 55 mph on county roads unless the county posts a different limit, and a posted sign always wins. On gravel or dirt, the basic speed rule may call for much less. Drive at a pace that lets you stop for whatever waits over the next hill.
13Right-of-way
After a full stop, and with no sign against it, which left turn on a red light can be legal in Oklahoma?
Show answer
Correct answer: Leaving a one-way street to enter a second one-way street
Why
Oklahoma allows it in a single situation: you’re on a one-way street and turning into another street where all traffic also runs one way. You still stop completely and let pedestrians and traffic go first. Right turns on red follow the same steps and are legal unless a sign forbids them, so look for NO TURN ON RED before either one.
14Permit & teen rules
With an Oklahoma learner permit, when and with whom may you drive?
Show answer
Correct answer: 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., with a licensed driver 21 or older beside you
Why
An Oklahoma permit works only from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., and someone 21 or older with a valid license must ride next to you the whole time. That person doesn’t have to be a parent. For your 50 practice hours, the supervisor also needs at least two years with a license.
15Parking
How close to a crosswalk at an intersection may you park on an Oklahoma street?
Show answer
Correct answer: No closer than 20 feet
Why
Oklahoma wants a 20-foot buffer between your parked car and an intersection crosswalk, and you can never park on the crosswalk itself. That gap lets turning drivers see people stepping off the curb. Before a stop sign, flashing beacon or signal at the roadside, the gap grows to 30 feet.
16Safe driving
Driving on an unlit Oklahoma road with your high beams on, how close can an oncoming vehicle get before you must switch to low beams?
Show answer
Correct answer: 1,000 feet
Why
Oklahoma law sets 1,000 feet for oncoming traffic, farther than many drivers expect. When you’re following another vehicle, dim within 600 feet so you don’t blind the driver through the mirrors. Stick with low beams in fog, rain or snow as well.
17Alcohol & phones
After an arrest for impaired driving, a driver turns down the officer’s request for a breath test. What follows under Oklahoma’s implied consent law?
Show answer
Correct answer: License revocation, at least 180 days for a first revocation
Why
Driving in Oklahoma means you’ve already agreed to a breath or blood test if you’re arrested for impaired driving. Refusing brings revocation even if you hadn’t been drinking: at least 180 days the first time and until you finish the Impaired Driver Accountability Program, and at least one or two years if earlier revocations are on your record.
18Lane markings
The middle lane of a busy Oklahoma road has a solid yellow line on each outer edge, a dashed yellow line just inside each, and turn arrows pointing both ways. How far may you travel in it before turning?
Show answer
Correct answer: No more than 200 feet
Why
This two-way left-turn lane is for left turns only, and Oklahoma law caps your travel in it at 200 feet. Never use it to pass or as an extra travel lane. Signal, move in close to your turn, and wait there for a gap.
19Road signs
Posted at an Oklahoma railroad crossing is a small blue-and-white sign with a phone number on it. When is that number meant to be used?
Show answer
Correct answer: When a vehicle is stalled on the tracks
Why
This is the Emergency Notification System sign. If your car stalls on the tracks, get everyone out and move off the tracks fast, angling in the direction the train is approaching from. Once you’re clear, call 911 and then the number on the sign.
20Crashes & emergencies
After a heavy storm, water is running across a low spot in an Oklahoma road and you can’t tell how deep it is. What should you do?
Show answer
Correct answer: Turn around and find another route
Why
The Oklahoma Driver Manual warns that about 2 feet of water floats most vehicles, and 6 inches of fast-moving water can knock a person off their feet. You can’t see whether the road under it has washed away. Turn around and take another way.
Round 3 · Questions 21–30
21Sharing the road
Ahead, a patrol car sits on the right shoulder with red and blue lights flashing. You’re in the right lane, and there’s a safe gap in the lane to your left. Under Oklahoma’s Move Over law, what should you do?
Show answer
Correct answer: Move to the left lane if it’s safe, or slow down if you can’t
Why
Oklahoma’s Move Over law, also called the Bernardo-Mills Law, has you leave the lane next to a stopped emergency vehicle, tow truck, road maintenance vehicle or any stationary vehicle with flashing lights, or slow down when you can’t change lanes safely. A first offense costs $1,000. The people at the roadside are working just feet from moving traffic.
22Speed limits
A state highway takes you past a school far outside any town. The school zone is properly marked, its hours are in effect, and no other school speed is posted. How fast may you go?
Show answer
Correct answer: 25 mph
Why
For marked school zones on highways outside cities and towns, Oklahoma law sets 25 mph during the posted times. Inside city limits, each town posts its own school-zone speed, so read the sign. Speeding while the school limit is in effect doubles the fine.
23Right-of-way
You’re northbound on a highway split by a wide grass median when a southbound school bus on the far side stops with its red lights flashing. What does Oklahoma law require of you?
Show answer
Correct answer: Keep going with care, since the bus is on a separate roadway
Why
Normally, traffic from both directions has to stop for a school bus showing red loading lights. The exception is a highway with separate roadways, like this one: drivers on the other side may continue. Passing a stopped bus when you should have stopped brings a fine, 4 points and a one-year license revocation for a first offense.
24Permit & teen rules
Before an Oklahoma teen takes the drive test for an intermediate license, how much supervised practice is required, and how is it confirmed?
Show answer
Correct answer: 50 hours, 10 at night, confirmed by a parent’s sworn affidavit
Why
Oklahoma asks for at least 50 hours behind the wheel, 10 of them after dark, with a licensed driver 21+ who has held a license at least two years. Service Oklahoma doesn’t collect driving logs; a parent signs the Affidavit of Driver Training instead. You also need 180 days on the permit with no traffic convictions.
25Parking
You’re hunting for parking in an Oklahoma town. Which of these spots is legal?
Show answer
Correct answer: 35 feet before a stop sign at the roadside
Why
A stop sign needs 30 feet of clear curb in front of it, so 35 feet is fine. The other spots break Oklahoma law: hydrants need 15 feet, a railroad crossing needs 50 feet measured from its closest rail, and parking in front of a driveway is banned outright.
26Safe driving
On a four-lane Oklahoma interstate, you settle into the left lane and stay there mile after mile with no one to pass. What does state law say?
Show answer
Correct answer: The left lane is for passing, so move back to the right
Why
Oklahoma keeps the left lane of multi-lane highways for passing. You may stay in it only when traffic or merging makes that necessary; city streets and county roads that aren’t interstates or turnpikes are exempt. Pass, signal, and return to the right.
27Alcohol & phones
Which statement about texting while driving in Oklahoma is true?
Show answer
Correct answer: It’s banned for all drivers while moving; the fine is up to $100
Why
Oklahoma bars all drivers from typing, sending or reading texts on a hand-held device while the vehicle is in motion. The fine reaches $100, and contacting 911, police, fire, an ambulance or a hospital about an emergency is exempt. Commercial drivers face stricter rules: no hand-held calls either, and a $500 fine.
28Road signs
At a rural crossroads, the traffic light facing you is blinking red. How does the Oklahoma Driver Manual tell you to handle it?
Show answer
Correct answer: Come to a full stop, then go when it’s safe, just as at a STOP sign
Why
A flashing red light means exactly what a STOP sign means: stop completely, yield to anyone with the right-of-way, then proceed. A flashing yellow light is different; it only asks you to slow down and cross with care. Don’t sit waiting for green: once you’ve stopped and the way is clear, go.
29Right-of-way
A pedestrian using a white cane steps up to cross in front of you. Where does the Oklahoma Driver Manual tell you to stop?
Show answer
Correct answer: At least 15 feet away, outside the crosswalk
Why
Oklahoma’s manual has you halt 15 feet or more away and keep out of the crosswalk while a blind walker, using a white cane or led by a guide dog, gets across. Stay put until they’re clear. In any marked or unmarked crosswalk, walkers get the right-of-way, and you never pass a car that has stopped for one.
30Road signs
Topping a rise on a two-lane farm road, you find a tractor ahead with an orange triangle edged in red on its back. What is that emblem telling you?
Show answer
Correct answer: It marks a vehicle that travels 25 mph or slower
Why
That’s the slow-moving vehicle emblem, used on farm, construction and road-maintenance equipment that goes 25 mph or slower. At highway speed you close the gap in seconds, so lift off the gas the moment you see it. Pass only where you can see at least 200 feet of clear road and no no-passing zone.
Round 4 · Questions 31–40
31Safe driving
A yellow diamond sign with a leaping deer marks this stretch, and it’s an October evening around dusk. A deer bounds into your lane. What does the Oklahoma Driver Manual advise?
Show answer
Correct answer: Slow down and hold your lane rather than swerving
Why
A sudden swerve can send you off the road or into another vehicle, a worse crash than hitting the animal. In Oklahoma, deer crashes peak from October through December, and animals are most active at dawn and dusk, so watch the roadsides closely where this sign is posted.
32Speed limits
What speed limit does Oklahoma law set for roads inside state parks and wildlife refuges?
Show answer
Correct answer: 35 mph
Why
Roads in Oklahoma state parks and wildlife refuges carry a 35 mph limit. Campers, hikers, boat trailers and animals share those roads, often right beside the pavement. Keep it slow even on open stretches, since wildlife can step out without warning.
33Speed limits
Thick fog rolls over an Oklahoma highway posted at 70 mph. What does the state’s basic speed rule expect from you?
Show answer
Correct answer: Slow down so you could stop for anything that appears within your view
Why
Oklahoma’s basic speed rule ties your speed to traffic, the road surface and the weather, and it has to let you halt before anything that shows up in the visible stretch ahead. The posted number is a ceiling for good conditions, not a target. The rule cuts both ways: creeping far below a reasonable speed can also get you cited.
34Right-of-way
Your light turns green, but a funeral procession is still rolling through the intersection ahead. How should you handle it?
Show answer
Correct answer: Wait until the whole procession has passed
Why
Oklahoma drivers yield to funeral processions. Once the lead car has entered an intersection, the rest of the line may follow it through even if the signal changes. Be patient and let the last car clear before you move.
35Permit & teen rules
You’re 16, drive with an Oklahoma intermediate license, and no adult is with you. How many passengers may you carry?
Show answer
Correct answer: One, unless all of them live in your household
Why
An intermediate license allows one passenger. The cap lifts when every passenger lives in your household, or when a licensed driver 21 or older sits in the front seat. Driving alone is also limited to 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., except for trips to or from school, church or work activities.
36Permit & teen rules
Since November 2023, what must an Oklahoma driver under 18 finish before getting an intermediate license?
Show answer
Correct answer: The free online Oklahoma Work Zone Safe course
Why
Teens bring the certificate from the free Work Zone Safe course when they apply. Work zones get serious attention in Oklahoma: speeding fines double when workers or equipment are present, and since November 2025 phones must be hands-free there. Finish the course while you’re still on your permit.
37Parking
On a steep downhill street, you pull up next to the curb to park. Which way should the front tires point before you walk away?
Show answer
Correct answer: Turned toward the curb
Why
Facing downhill, Oklahoma’s manual has you stop within six inches of the curb and turn the front wheels into it, so the curb catches the car if it rolls. Uphill with a curb, turn them away; uphill with no curb, turn them to the right. Then set the parking brake every time.
38Alcohol & phones
You’re driving home with a bottle of wine that was opened at dinner. Where may it ride under Oklahoma law?
Show answer
Correct answer: In the trunk, or a rear area no one in the car can reach
Why
Oklahoma allows an open alcohol container in a vehicle only in the trunk or a rear compartment that no one inside can reach while the car is moving. The glove box, the floor and the back seat are all within reach, so they don’t qualify. Stow it before you start the engine.
39Safe driving
Oklahoma law sets a minimum distance for signaling before a turn or a lane change. What is it?
Show answer
Correct answer: 100 feet
Why
Turn the signal on no later than 100 feet out and leave it on until you turn; Oklahoma applies the same 100 feet to lane changes. In town, the manual describes that as about a third of a block. Signal before you brake so the driver behind knows why you’re slowing.
40Road signs
An orange diamond-shaped ROAD WORK AHEAD sign marks a highway project, and crews are out beside the lanes. How does Oklahoma treat a speeding ticket written in this zone?
Show answer
Correct answer: The fine is doubled while workers or equipment are present
Why
Orange is Oklahoma’s color for construction and maintenance zones, and speeding fines double there when workers or equipment are present. Ignoring construction-zone signs is a misdemeanor on its own, with fines from $100 to $1,000. Follow every flagger’s signal, and since November 2025, keep your phone hands-free here.

What’s on the Oklahoma permit test
Every question on the written test comes from the Oklahoma Driver Manual (Service Oklahoma, updated November 2025), and road signs are mixed in with the traffic laws rather than tested on their own. Start with these six areas.
Road signs
Colors talk first: red stops or forbids, yellow warns, orange marks a work zone, green points the way.
A flashing red signal works exactly like a STOP sign; flashing yellow means slow down and cross with care.
School Zone sign with its yellow light flashing? Drop to the speed on the sign and look for kids.
Right-of-way
Four-way stop: first to arrive goes first; arrive together and the driver on the left yields.
No sign where a dirt county road meets a paved one? The unpaved road yields.
School bus with red lights on: stop from both directions, unless it’s across a divided highway.
Speed limits
Turnpikes can be posted up to 80 mph, other controlled-access highways up to 75.
No sign on a county road? The limit is 55 mph.
Marked school zone on a highway outside town: 25 mph. State park roads: 35.
Parking
Leave 15 feet to a hydrant, 20 to a crosswalk at an intersection, 30 before a stop sign.
Keep 50 feet from a crossing’s nearest rail and 20 feet from a fire station driveway.
At the curb, stay within 18 inches. On a hill, close the gap to 6 inches and turn the wheels the right way.
Alcohol & phones
0.08 is DUI for adults; under 21, any measurable alcohol breaks the law.
Refuse the breath or blood test and your license is revoked for at least 180 days.
No texting for anyone, and since November 1, 2025, hands-free only in active school zones and work zones.
Teen rules
Learner permit: 5 a.m.–10 p.m. only, with a licensed driver 21+ in the seat beside you.
Intermediate license: alone 5 a.m.–10 p.m. and one passenger, with exceptions for school, church, work and household.
Hand-held phone use at the wheel can get a learner permit or intermediate license suspended or canceled.

How many questions are on the Oklahoma permit test, and what score passes?
Service Oklahoma’s Class D written test is 20 multiple-choice questions covering Oklahoma traffic laws, signs and safe driving, all taken from the Oklahoma Driver Manual. You need 15 correct, which is 75%. Signs are part of the same test, not a separate section.
How many times can I take the Oklahoma written test?
Online, you get two attempts; after that you test in person, where there’s no limit on tries. After a fail, wait at least a day before trying again. Each failed test adds $4, which you pay when your permit is issued.
Can I take the Oklahoma permit test online?
Yes. Service Oklahoma’s KnowTo Drive portal lets you test from home on a desktop or laptop with a webcam and microphone; phones and touch screens aren’t allowed. You get 60 minutes, there’s no extra fee, and if you’re under 18 a parent or guardian must be there to confirm who you are. Teens can test online from 14 (13½ on a farm), though the permit itself still waits for 15 or 16.
Can I take the Oklahoma permit test in Spanish?
Not right now: Service Oklahoma offers the written test in English only. If reading is the hard part, you can ask the examiner to give the test orally. To learn the rules in Spanish first, use this practice test and the app, both available in Spanish.
How old do you have to be to get a learner permit in Oklahoma?
15 if you’re enrolled in an approved driver education course, or 16 without one. Teens hold the permit at least 180 days and complete 50 supervised hours, 10 at night, before an intermediate license at 16 (16½ without driver ed). On the intermediate license, you drive alone only from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. and carry one passenger, with exceptions for school, church, work and household members.
How much does an Oklahoma learner permit cost?
$42.50 to issue and print, plus $4 for each failed test on your record. Taking the tests costs nothing; you pay once you’ve passed. The intermediate license is $25 later on, and a first Class D license is $42.50 for four years or $81 for eight.
Is the Oklahoma permit test given by the DMV?
Oklahoma’s driver licenses come from Service Oklahoma (SOK), which took over license services from the Department of Public Safety. You can take the written test at an SOK location or a participating Licensed Operator (tag agent), or online from home. There are no appointments: join the waitlist online or when you walk in.
What’s the best way to study for the Oklahoma permit test?
Read the Oklahoma Driver Manual, since the test questions come from it, then practice until 15 of 20 feels easy. Start with the 40 questions above, then keep going in the app with 463 Oklahoma questions and 36 short lessons, every answer explained.
