Round 1 · Questions 1–10
1Speed limits
Driving across Arkansas, you pass a SPEED LIMIT 75 sign. On which type of road does state law allow a 75 mph limit?
Show answer
Correct answer: A rural controlled-access highway with four or more lanes split by a median
Why
Arkansas tops out at 75 mph, and only on rural controlled-access highways with at least four lanes and a dividing median. Inside an urban area a controlled-access highway is capped at 65, and big trucks of 26,001 pounds or more stay at 70 even where cars may do 75. If a lower number is posted, that sign wins.
2Permit & teen rules
With an Arkansas instruction permit, who must be in the car whenever you drive?
Show answer
Correct answer: A licensed driver 21 or older, in the seat beside you
Why
A permit holder may drive only with a licensed driver aged 21 or older sitting next to them. Everyone in the car has to wear a seat belt too. Use your permit time to practice in rain, at night and on highways, not just around the block.
3Road signs
Up ahead, a road maintenance truck has flashing green lights. What does green mean on an Arkansas work vehicle?
Show answer
Correct answer: You’re entering an active work zone, so slow down and stay alert
Why
Arkansas puts flashing green lights on construction and maintenance vehicles to mark an active work zone. Ease off the gas and watch for workers and equipment close to your lane. When workers are present, fines for moving violations double.
4Parking
How close to a fire hydrant may you legally park in Arkansas?
Show answer
Correct answer: 15 feet
Why
Leave at least 15 feet between your car and a hydrant so firefighters can reach it and hook up. The same no-parking list keeps you 20 feet from an intersection crosswalk and 30 feet from any stop sign, yield sign or traffic light. Learn these distances as a set, because they’re easy to mix up.
5Alcohol & phones
A 19-year-old Arkansas driver blows 0.03 on a breath test. What does that reading mean?
Show answer
Correct answer: An underage DUI, since the line for drivers under 21 is 0.02
Why
For drivers under 21, Arkansas treats an alcohol concentration of 0.02 or more as underage DUI, up to 0.08, where DWI begins. A first underage DUI means a 90-day license suspension. For drivers 21 and older, DWI starts at 0.08.
6Right-of-way
You’re on a divided highway, and across the median a school bus sits stopped, red lights blinking. When may you, traveling the opposite way, keep driving?
Show answer
Correct answer: When the median between the two roadways is at least 20 feet wide
Why
Arkansas lets oncoming traffic continue only when a median 20 feet wide or more divides the highway. With a narrower median, every lane stops. Drivers following the bus always stop, whatever the road looks like.
7Lane markings
You’re turning left out of a driveway onto a road with a shared center turn lane like this one. How may Arkansas drivers use that lane?
Show answer
Correct answer: As a place to pull into and then merge with traffic, but not to build up speed
Why
Arkansas lets a driver pulling out of a side street or driveway use the shared center lane to merge into traffic. What you can’t do is treat it as an acceleration lane and drive down it. Watch for someone entering the same center lane from the other direction before you pull in.
8Safe driving
It starts to rain, and you switch on your windshield wipers. What else does Arkansas law require?
Show answer
Correct answer: Turning on your headlights
Why
In Arkansas, any time you need your wipers, your headlights must be on as well. Driving with only your parking lights on is illegal. Headlights help other drivers spot you in the spray as much as they help you see.
9Road signs
Below a railroad crossbuck in Arkansas you notice a small plate that reads EXEMPT. What does it tell you?
Show answer
Correct answer: The crossing has been abandoned or taken out of service
Why
An EXEMPT sign marks a crossing that has been discontinued or abandoned, and it can sit under a crossbuck or an advance warning sign. A quick look both ways still costs you nothing. Where there’s no EXEMPT sign, treat the crossbuck as an order to yield to trains.
10Speed limits
You turn onto a street in an Arkansas town and spot no speed limit sign anywhere. Unless signs say otherwise, what is the limit in an urban district?
Show answer
Correct answer: 30 mph
Why
Arkansas law sets 30 mph as the default for any urban district. A city may post a different number, and then the sign takes over. The limit assumes ideal conditions, so go slower around kids, parked cars and people crossing.
Round 2 · Questions 11–20
11Right-of-way
You’re driving behind this school bus on a two-lane Arkansas road when it stops with red lights flashing and the stop arm out. What does state law require?
Show answer
Correct answer: Stop at least 30 feet back and stay stopped until the bus moves again
Why
On a road like this one, Arkansas makes drivers from both directions halt no closer than 30 feet to a bus that’s loading or unloading, and stay put until it pulls away. Going around one is a misdemeanor punished by a $250–$1,000 fine, a county jail term of 90 days at most, or the two together. It’s also an automatic failure on the ASP driving test.
12Permit & teen rules
What is the youngest age at which you can get an Arkansas instruction permit?
Show answer
Correct answer: 14
Why
Arkansas issues instruction permits at 14 to applicants who pass the knowledge and vision tests. Under 18, a parent or legal guardian has to sign for you. The permit is good for two years, and at 14 or 15 you can move up to a learner’s license by passing the driving test.
13Speed limits
Workers are on the job in an Arkansas highway work zone, and you get caught speeding through it. How is the fine handled?
Show answer
Correct answer: It is doubled and can reach as much as $5,000
Why
With workers present, Arkansas doubles the fine for speeding and other moving violations in a work zone, up to $5,000, and mobile work zones count too. Some interstate work zones use speed cameras, with an officer waiting where the zone ends. Slow down as soon as the orange signs begin.
14Alcohol & phones
Drivers aged 18 to 20 in Arkansas may use a phone while driving in what way?
Show answer
Correct answer: Hands-free only, with a handheld phone allowed just in an emergency
Why
Arkansas sets phone rules by age. From 18 through 20 you may talk only hands-free, and under 18 no phone at all, not even hands-free, except in an emergency. Texting, email and social media are off-limits for every driver.
15Road signs
The left-turn signal ahead shows only a flashing yellow arrow. What does it let you do?
Show answer
Correct answer: Turn left after yielding to oncoming traffic and pedestrians
Why
A flashing yellow arrow allows the turn but doesn’t protect it, so oncoming cars may still have a green light. Wait for a safe gap and let anyone in the crosswalk finish crossing. Only a steady green arrow gives you a protected turn.
16Parking
Which of these curbside spots would break Arkansas parking law?
Show answer
Correct answer: 40 feet from a railroad crossing
Why
Arkansas keeps parked cars 50 feet from a railroad crossing, so 40 feet is too close. The other two spots are fine, since the rules are 30 feet from a stop sign and 20 feet from an intersection crosswalk. And never stop on the tracks themselves.
17Safe driving
Your high beams are on at night on a rural Arkansas road. When must you switch to low beams?
Show answer
Correct answer: Once an oncoming car is within 500 feet, or you’re following another car closer than 200 feet
Why
Bright beams blind other drivers, so dim them within 500 feet of oncoming traffic and whenever you’re less than 200 feet behind another car. Low beams also work better in fog, snow and heavy rain, where high beams reflect back at you. The study guide also wants your headlights switched on half an hour after the sun sets and kept on until half an hour before it rises.
18Sharing the road
You’re following a tractor-trailer and can’t see the driver’s face in its side mirror. What does that tell you?
Show answer
Correct answer: The truck driver can’t see you either
Why
If you can’t see the driver in the truck’s mirror, you’re sitting in a no zone. The Arkansas study guide says a big rig’s blind areas reach as far as 20 feet ahead of the cab, run along both sides, and stretch up to 200 feet behind. Drop back or pass without lingering beside the trailer.
19Road signs
According to the Arkansas study guide, what can happen to a driver who fails to yield at a YIELD sign?
Show answer
Correct answer: Up to $1,000 in fines plus 180 days without a license
Why
The study guide puts the price of not yielding at as much as $1,000, plus a 180-day suspension. The red-and-white triangle points down and tells you to slow, let cross traffic go first, and stop if that’s what it takes. Look both ways before you merge.
20Safe driving
What following distance does the Arkansas study guide recommend behind the car ahead?
Show answer
Correct answer: At least two seconds, and four on slippery roads or in bad weather
Why
Pick a fixed point such as a sign, and start counting when the car ahead passes it. Reach the point before two seconds and you’re too close; stretch it to four when roads are wet or slick. Behind a motorcycle, leave four to six seconds.
Round 3 · Questions 21–30
21Right-of-way
A police car sits on the shoulder with its lights flashing, as shown, and you’re in the lane right next to it. What does the Arkansas move-over law tell you to do?
Show answer
Correct answer: Move to the lane farthest from it, or slow down and pass with care if you can’t change lanes safely
Why
The law covers police cars, ambulances, fire trucks, ARDOT and contractor vehicles, utility trucks and tow trucks showing flashing lights. Get over to the farthest lane when it’s safe, and if it isn’t, slow down as you go by. A violation costs $250 to $1,000, and a court can also suspend your license for 90 days to six months.
22Permit & teen rules
An Arkansas teen with an intermediate license is driving home alone from a party. During which hours does the law keep them off the road?
Show answer
Correct answer: 11 p.m. to 4 a.m.
Why
Intermediate drivers may not drive from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. unless a licensed driver 21 or older is in the car. The exceptions are trips to or from a school activity, a church event or a job, and emergencies. A party isn’t one of them, so plan to be home before 11.
23Speed limits
On an Arkansas county road, the county judge has never set a speed limit. What limit applies there?
Show answer
Correct answer: 40 mph
Why
When the county judge hasn’t set one, state law makes 40 mph the limit on county roads. Going more than 15 mph over a county-road limit is a Class C misdemeanor, not just a ticket. Gravel, narrow lanes and farm equipment often call for less.
24Alcohol & phones
After a DWI arrest, an adult Arkansas driver refuses a breath test for the first time. What happens to the license?
Show answer
Correct answer: A 180-day suspension
Why
Driving in Arkansas means you’ve already agreed to chemical testing if you’re arrested for DWI or involved in a crash. A first refusal costs your license for 180 days, a second within five years means 24 months, and the penalty keeps climbing after that. Saying no doesn’t make the problem go away.
25Road signs
This round yellow sign with a big X and two R’s appears on a country road. What is it warning you about?
Show answer
Correct answer: A railroad crossing ahead, so slow down and be ready to stop
Why
The round yellow RR sign stands before the tracks to give you time to slow down and check for trains. At the tracks you’ll find the white X-shaped crossbuck, which means yield to trains; a number under it tells you how many tracks there are. If the line has been abandoned, an extra EXEMPT plate is added below the sign.
26Right-of-way
You and another driver pull up to an all-way stop a few seconds apart. Who has the right to go first?
Show answer
Correct answer: The driver who reached the intersection and stopped first
Why
At 3-way, 4-way and all-way stops, the first vehicle to arrive and come to a complete stop goes first. Arkansas traffic law only says who must yield, so no driver ever holds an absolute right-of-way. Make sure the other driver is actually waiting before you roll.
27Safe driving
How far before a turn or lane change does the Arkansas study guide tell you to turn on your signal?
Show answer
Correct answer: At least 100 feet
Why
Give other drivers at least 100 feet of warning before you turn, change lanes, merge into traffic or pull over to park. A late signal leaves everyone around you guessing. Check your mirrors and blind spot before you move, and make sure the signal shuts off afterward.
28Lane markings
You’re cruising in the left lane of a four-lane Arkansas highway, and cars are stacking up behind you. What does state law say?
Show answer
Correct answer: Move right, because the left lane is for passing and you can’t hold up traffic in it
Why
Arkansas forbids staying in the passing lane of a multilane road for mile after mile when you’re holding up the drivers behind you. The exceptions include passing, a closed or unsafe right lane and a left-side exit. Finish your pass, signal and move back to the right.
29Alcohol & phones
Even for adult drivers, where does Arkansas ban handheld phone use?
Show answer
Correct answer: Passing a school zone during school hours with children outside, or a work zone with workers present
Why
Those two places are where every driver has to put the handheld phone down, emergencies excepted. A first offense there costs $25 to $250. Set your navigation before you leave so you never need to touch the phone there.
30Permit & teen rules
How long is an Arkansas instruction permit valid, and can it be renewed?
Show answer
Correct answer: Two years, and it can’t be renewed or extended
Why
The permit runs for two years from the day you pass the knowledge test. ASP won’t renew or extend it for any reason, so if it expires before you pass the driving test and buy your license, you start over and retake every part of the exam. Book the driving test well ahead of that date.
Round 4 · Questions 31–40
31Sharing the road
Ahead of you on a two-lane highway, a tractor shows this orange triangle edged in red. What speed does that emblem usually signal?
Show answer
Correct answer: 25 mph or less
Why
The slow-moving vehicle emblem goes on farm tractors, animal-drawn vehicles and road maintenance vehicles that typically travel 25 mph or slower. You’ll close the gap fast, so ease off early. Pass only where passing is legal and you can see a long stretch of clear road.
32Speed limits
A downpour has cut your view of the road to roughly 200 feet. What is the fastest the Arkansas Driver License Study Guide says you should go?
Show answer
Correct answer: 30 mph
Why
When rain or fog keeps you from seeing more than about 200 feet ahead, the study guide puts your ceiling at 30 mph. Posted limits are set for ideal conditions, and you can be ticketed for going too fast for the weather even below the sign’s number. Your wipers are on, so your headlights must be too.
33Right-of-way
You’re halfway through an intersection when an ambulance with its siren wailing comes up behind you. What’s the right move?
Show answer
Correct answer: Keep going until you’re past the intersection, then ease over to the right
Why
Stopping inside the intersection can box the ambulance in. The Arkansas study guide says to clear the intersection first, then move as far right as you can and let it pass. On the ASP driving test, failing to yield to an emergency vehicle is an automatic fail.
34Alcohol & phones
A 35-year-old is driving on an open Arkansas highway, far from any school or work zone. Which of these phone uses is legal?
Show answer
Correct answer: Making a phone call
Why
Drivers 21 and older may talk on the phone outside school and work zones, though the study guide warns it’s never truly safe. Texting, email and social media on a handheld device are banned at every age. A first violation costs $25 to $250, and causing a crash adds an extra fine twice as large.
35Safe driving
In a heavy downpour your tires begin to ride up on the water, like the one shown. What should you do?
Show answer
Correct answer: Ease off the gas and keep the wheel straight until the tires grip again
Why
That’s hydroplaning, and the Arkansas study guide says it can start at about 50 mph in heavy rain. Hard braking or a sharp turn while the tires float can throw you into a skid. Slow down before it happens: most tires grip well on wet roads up to around 35 mph.
36Road signs
A flagger in an Arkansas work zone holds up a STOP paddle, while the traffic light past the zone shows green. What do you do?
Show answer
Correct answer: Stop where the flagger tells you, at least a car length away
Why
Inside a work zone, a flagger’s directions override other traffic signals. Stop where you’re told, leaving at least one car length between you and the flagger, and wait to be waved on. Keep your eyes up, since crews and machines may be working right next to traffic.
37Parking
When you parallel park on an Arkansas street, how far from the curb may your wheels be?
Show answer
Correct answer: No more than 18 inches
Why
Your curbside wheels must end up within 18 inches of the curb. Parking farther out narrows the lane and leaves your car in the path of passing traffic. On a slope, set the parking brake and angle your wheels into the curb, or toward the road’s edge where there’s no curb.
38Permit & teen rules
How many unrelated passengers under 21 may an Arkansas intermediate driver carry when no licensed driver 21 or older sits up front?
Show answer
Correct answer: One
Why
The cap is one unrelated passenger under 21, unless a licensed driver 21 or older sits in the front passenger seat. Brothers, sisters, step-siblings and children who live in the same home don’t count toward it. Fewer friends in the car means fewer distractions while you’re new behind the wheel.
39Permit & teen rules
You fail the Arkansas knowledge test on the 3rd of the month. Counting the way ASP explains it, what’s the earliest date you could retest?
Show answer
Correct answer: The 9th
Why
After a failed knowledge test, Arkansas makes you wait five calendar days. The test day doesn’t count, so the 4th is day one and the 8th is day five, which means you may return on the 9th. Each new attempt adds another $5 to the price of your license.
40Crashes & emergencies
You’re in a crash in Arkansas. Nobody is hurt, but the damage looks like about $4,000. Who must you notify right away?
Show answer
Correct answer: The nearest law enforcement agency
Why
Arkansas drivers must immediately notify police after a crash that injures or kills anyone or causes $3,000 or more in property damage. Move the cars off the road if you can so they don’t block traffic. Damage like this also means an SR-1 accident report to DFA’s Office of Driver Services within 30 days, no matter who was at fault.

Under 18? Your road to a license
14Instruction permitPass the vision and knowledge tests, with a parent or guardian signing for you. Drive only with a licensed driver 21+ beside you, and everyone buckles up.
14–15Learner’s licensePass the driving test on your permit and trade up to a learner’s license. A licensed driver 21 or older still rides with you.
16Intermediate licensePass the driving test if you haven’t yet. Until six months have gone by since your permit was issued, a licensed adult 21+ still rides along.
16–17Intermediate limitsNo driving 11 p.m.–4 a.m. unless a licensed driver 21+ is along or the trip is for school, church, work or an emergency. One unrelated passenger under 21 at most, and no phone, not even hands-free.
18Regular licenseTwelve months with no serious crash or violation, and the teen restrictions come off.
18 or older? You follow the same path: a permit after the vision and knowledge tests, then the driving test in your own car. From age 21, a Class D license costs $40 and is good for eight years.
What’s on the Arkansas permit test
The Arkansas State Police calls its Arkansas Driver License Study Guide (Volume 1, Edition 10, October 2026) the key source for the written test. Start with these six areas.
Road signs
A red octagon is always STOP; a point-down triangle is YIELD, and failing to yield there can cost up to $1,000.
Flashing green lights on a work vehicle mark an active work zone, so ease off the gas.
A round yellow RR sign means tracks ahead; an EXEMPT plate means the crossing is out of service.
Right-of-way
No signs or signals? Yield to the right. At an all-way stop, the first to stop goes first.
Red lights on a school bus: stop 30 feet away from either direction. Only traffic across a median 20+ feet wide keeps going.
Flashing lights on the shoulder? Move to the far lane, or slow down if you can’t.
Speed limits
75 mph is the top limit, on rural divided freeways with four or more lanes; urban freeways max out at 65.
30 mph in town and 40 mph on county roads, unless signs say otherwise.
Workers present? Moving-violation fines double in a work zone, up to $5,000.
Parking
15 feet from a hydrant; 20 feet from an intersection crosswalk or a fire station driveway.
30 feet from a stop sign, yield sign or signal; 50 feet from a railroad crossing.
Wheels within 18 inches of the curb; on a hill, set the brake and turn the wheels to the curb.
Alcohol & phones
0.08 is DWI for adults, 0.04 in a commercial vehicle, and 0.02 is enough for a DUI under 21.
Turn down a chemical test after a DWI arrest and your license is suspended for 180 days the first time.
No texting at any age. Ages 18–20: hands-free calls only. Under 18: no phone at all.
Teen rules
Permit drivers need a licensed driver 21 or older in the seat beside them.
Intermediate license: no driving 11 p.m.–4 a.m. without a 21+ driver, except for school, church, work or emergencies.
One unrelated passenger under 21 at most, unless a licensed adult 21+ sits up front.

How many questions are on the Arkansas permit test, and what score passes?
The Arkansas State Police knowledge test has 25 multiple-choice questions on a touch-screen computer, and 20 correct answers pass it, which is 80%. Each question offers up to three choices. You may skip as many as two questions; they move to the end, and once you reach 20 correct they’re never asked.
What happens if I fail the Arkansas knowledge test?
You wait five calendar days and try again. The day you failed doesn’t count, so day six is the earliest you can come back. Every attempt adds another $5 exam fee to the price of your license, and ASP publishes no cap on the number of tries.
Is the Arkansas permit test given by the DMV, and can I take it online?
Not by a DMV. The Arkansas State Police gives the vision, knowledge and driving tests in person, at testing sites in every county, and there’s no online version of the knowledge test. Book through the ASP online scheduler and arrive 15 minutes early. Once you pass the driving test, you buy the license itself at a State Revenue Office run by the Department of Finance and Administration (DFA).
Can I take the Arkansas permit test in Spanish?
The Arkansas State Police doesn’t say which languages the knowledge test comes in, so check with your testing site before test day. It does post a Spanish study guide, the Manual de Manejo de Arkansas, but that edition is dated January 2018 and some rules have changed since: it still says the permit lasts one year, while the current English guide says two. During the test you can raise your hand and the examiner will explain a word in simpler terms. This practice test and the app both work in Spanish.
How old do you have to be to get a permit in Arkansas?
At 14. An instruction permit comes first, after the vision and knowledge tests; the driving test then gets you a learner’s license at 14 or 15, or an intermediate license at 16 or 17. Arkansas doesn’t require driver ed or a log of practice hours, but for at least the first six months after your permit is issued you drive only with a licensed adult 21 or older. Intermediate drivers stay off the road from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. unless a licensed driver 21 or older rides along or the trip is for school, church, work or an emergency. They may have only one unrelated passenger under 21 and can’t use a phone at all. At 18, after a clean year, the limits end.
How much does the Arkansas knowledge test cost?
$5 for each written attempt, and you don’t pay it at the testing site: DFA adds the exam fees to the price of your license at the State Revenue Office. A Class D license for drivers 21 and older costs $40 and lasts eight years. Learner’s and intermediate licenses, and licenses issued at 18 to 20, are prorated and end one month after your 16th, 18th or 21st birthday.
What do I need for the Arkansas driving test?
Book it ahead and bring your own car, your original permit, a licensed driver 21 or older, current proof of insurance and the registration. ASP won’t test in a car with a donut spare, a cracked windshield in the driver’s view or front-window tint darker than 25%. You start by pointing out the car’s controls, with no more than three misses allowed, and some mistakes, like passing a stopped school bus or breaking the phone law, fail you on the spot and mean a 30-day wait.
What’s the best way to study for the Arkansas permit test?
Start with the study guide ASP posted in October 2026, the Arkansas Driver License Study Guide; ASP calls it the one essential source for the written test. Then practice until 20 of 25 feels easy. Begin with the 40 questions above, then let the app take you through 547 Arkansas questions and 36 short lessons, with every answer explained.
